The White Tiger
by Aravind Adiga
winner of the 2008 Man Booker Prize

Balram Halwai, the son of a rickshaw puller, and his struggling family live in "the Darkness," the name for the vast Indian countryside. After their father's death, Balram and his older brother, Kishan, leave their small village to seek work in the teashops of Dhanbad. Eventually, Balram lands a job as a driver for a wealthy family in Delhi.

The White Tiger echoes masterpieces of resistance and oppression (both The Jungle and Native Son come to mind). But Adiga depicts the modern Indian dilemma as unique. Intense family loyalties and a culture of servitude clash with the unfulfilled promises of democracy.
