The Fleishhacker Foundation supports local artists in establishing careers here and creating a body of work to be seen by local audiences. Grants are given to nonprofit arts organizations for such things as artists' fees and salaries, artistic development, and creation or presentation of new work. There are three arts grants programs; the two open to application are the Special Arts and Small Grants in the Arts programs. There is also a visual artists grant program, the Eureka Fellowships, for which artists must be nominated. The rest of the Foundation's grantmaking is in the area of precollegiate education.

Established through a combination of City and State legislation, GFTA is a national model of arts funding. It support an arts organization's general operating expenses, and does not limit the number of years a group can continue to receive grants. The goal is to be a stable, dependable base of support for organizations that continue to meet the funding criteria.

In concert with the Irvine Foundation's overall mission and goals, the goal of the Arts focus area is to promote a vibrant and inclusive artistic and cultural environment in California. Premised on sustaining a healthy arts "ecology" that considers the various and diverse components of the arts field and is concerned with both the creation and the delivery of art, our grantmaking strategies are clustered in the following three areas:

  • Connection Through Cultural Participation: encouraging the active engagement of Californians from all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds with excellent art from a variety of sources and cultures.
  • Artistic Creativity: promoting the creation and reinterpretation of art, infusing the arts field with new ideas and methods of creative expression.
  • Artistic Excellence in California: supporting large, established arts organizations in California (operating budgets of $5 million and above) with a proven track record of artistic achievement, administrative and managerial capacity, audience support, thoughtful organizational planning, and capable execution.

Marin Community Foundation funds the arts in the specific categories as described below:

  • Arts Program Area: The purpose of the Arts program is to support development of a rich cultural environment through the arts, which enhances the quality of life for all residents.
  • Arts in the Community: To support the creation, production, presentation, understanding, and appreciation of new and traditional forms of the visual, performing, literary, and interdisciplinary arts; and to promote strong fiscal and managerial capacity of the arts organizations.
  • Arts Education: To support opportunities for students and teachers to create, experience, and participate int he rich and diverse world of the arts.

Through its Arts & Culture Portfolio, Peninsula Community Foundation seeks to enhance the Peninsula's cultural life and resources through responsive grantmaking, supporting organizations that offer children and youth the opportunity to experience the arts as participants and audience members, that increase the venues for art exhibitions and performances on the Peninsula and that create and perform art reflecting the diversity of our community. In addition, through a request for proposal process that takes place four times a year, the Foundation's Peninsula Artists Fund and Emerging Arts Fund make grants to individual artists and local arts organizations.
