Frequently Asked Questions
Effectiveness & Accountability Initiative

Why were the Principles created?

In the last few years, there has been an increased focus on the misdeeds of a few foundations by the media and government. While the Effectiveness and Accountability Principles were developed in this era of increased scrutiny, they are not a direct response to it. Rather, they are reflective of the membership’s continual commitment to self-reflection and professional development. The Principles were created to both reflect our members’ innovation and leadership and provide a guideline for best practices in accountability and good governance.

How were the Principles developed?

The Effectiveness and Accountability Principles are the culmination of considerable effort on the part of NCG’s Board of Directors and the Effectiveness and Accountability Task Force. The Task Force was formed in the spring of 2006 to guide NCG in creating principles which would both inspire and reflect philanthropy in our region. The Task Force is representative of NCG’s diverse membership, and includes family foundations, corporate giving entities and community foundations.

What is required of members?

We view the Principles as core values in the field of philanthropy and guidelines for activity. Members are asked to embrace the spirit of these important ideas in their work and participation as a member of NCG assumes the shared commitment to these values. Members are not required to formally adopt the Principles but are asked to join us in exploring ways to best apply their lessons.

How will NCG support my learning, understanding and implementation of the Principles?

NCG hosts events, conversations and other learning opportunities aimed at helping our members interpret and implement the Effectiveness and Accountability Principles. Information regarding implementation is available in a section on the NCG website devoted to the Effectiveness and Accountability Initiative.
