Northern California Grantmakers is committed to supporting the coordination and education of the Bay Area philanthropic sector to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from a major local disaster. This Disaster Preparedness and Response Initiative will benefit the people, non-profit, corporate, and public sectors of the San Francisco Bay Area.
The Initiative includes:
A needs assessment of NCG members and corporate foundations to identify the operational and grantmaking resources needed for disaster management planning. The assessment will also identify current and planned Bay Area philanthropic-based activities, such as disaster-related research, funding, planning efforts, and dissemination of best practices. The assessment will determine existing and potential partnerships within the philanthropic sector where resources could be leveraged for coordinated action. The assessment is being conducted by Putnam Community Investment Consulting and will be completed in January 2007.
A strategic plan to support the organization and education of the Bay Area's philanthropic sector to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from a major local disaster. The plan will identify strategies carried out through philanthropic partnerships that support coordinated action as well as determine resources required for effective grantmaking. The plan will be completed in March 2007.
Task Force
A Task Force of fourteen NCG members oversees the Initiative and provides a forum for leadership, exchange of best practices, and collaboration.

Resources for Grantmakers
NCG has compiled an online disaster clearinghouse of information from across the nation on philanthropic responses to disasters. Resources address how foundations can prepare their internal operations and grantmaking functions for a disaster. Also included are reports on grantmaking responses to disasters, both in general and in response to specific events such as the September 11 attacks, the Gulf Coast Hurricanes, and the Loma Prieta earthquake.
